Friday Fantasy Beta! - Logs from Eorzea Entry X [Wicked Edition] (Report!)

So this is what I get for being offline for a few days, I come back and BAM theres almost daily info released for 3 days lol. Today we take a look at the Dengeki info released. As well as an interview with Hiromichi Tanaka by Nowgamer. More videos! Scary info! Read on to get all the goodies!

We're going to go ahead and start with the Dengeki report, and Sugar and I both have this to say -fangirl screams!!- WEEE!!!!! OMG OMG. -breathes- here is the list from Dengeki!

Stats used in Beta
  • HP, MP, and TP, which were raised by physical bonus points in the alpha, will now go up automatically.
  • Strength, Vitality, Dexterity, Mind, Intelligence, and Piety will be raised by physical bonus points.
  • Fire, Ice, Wind, Earth, Lightning, and Water elemental properties will be raised by elemental bonus
  • Agility, Charisma, and Luck have been scrapped

  • Physical and elemental bonus points will be earned when physical level raises.
Actions must be set to the main- or sub-weapon
  • The action bar has been increased to 30 slots. Each action has an action cost which is used when set to the action bar, and even if you still have slots left in your action bar, you cannot go over your action cost.
  • Actions must be set to the main- or sub-weapon. For example, phalanx, a move related to the shield, will most likely need to be set to the shield in your sub-weapon slot.
  • There are three pages of slots for actions, for a total of 30 slots.
  • There is a page of 10 slots for special class characteristics.
  • There is a page of 10 slots for crafting abilities.
Destroying body parts
By damaging or destroying a monster’s body parts or an enemy’s weapon during battle, a few things can happen. In some cases, they will be unable to use certain special attacks, the number of items dropped will increase, or the drop rate for certain items will increase.

Finally HP, MP, are going to be self managed. My problem here is, will it change depending on the ARM we put on? Will our secondary ARM also effect it since the secondary ARM effects what kind of actions we can put in our action bars. I would like to see the ARM take a firm grip of HP and MP and shake it so it does what it's told, when it's told to do it. Traditional Stats and Elemental Bonuses going up by themselves kind of bothers me, unless, we still get to add in attribute points to them to 'specialize' or 'customize' our characters for ourselves, just as we do with the actions. In the interview with Tanaka, he stated that he wants us to be able to create our own classes. Not just fall into the traditional White mage, or Warrior types. Scrapping CHA, and LUK? Okay that's fine, whatever. But AGI?! WHY! TELL US WHY SE! We deserve to know the reasons behind this travesty. AGI has always been a staple on Ranged weapons/attacks, so why should it suddenly go out now? Sugar and I don't see a reason for this, but we may find out in the Beta. I quote Sugar “We may be somewhere down the line and say 'Getting rid of AGI was the best idea ever!'” We'll have to wait and see.

Action bars, in FFXI we originally had 1 'book' with 10 pages each and 10 slots each page. Then SE gave us 10 books with 10 pages each and 10 slots on each page. Now, with FFXIV, they've given 30 slots, 10 pages per slot, so 3 pages. With these 30 slots, we are given actions, and with each action there are action costs. I have likened this to FF9 and the ability setting with the blue ability stones. In FF9 abilities like Beast-Killer, or Flee-gil were used by slotting those stones which then gave you free use of them. I cannot stress enough how much I LOVED this system. Simple, clean, very transparent, nothing crazy. Point farm to get your ability, set it, and move on :). While I love this system, reconfiguring the 30 slots or rather the Action slot cost, and then putting the actions into each bar would be time consuming without some kind of save option to save the positioning of each action. I mean, if I am a CON I wouldn't have the need for a Light Stab action in slot 1 and other various Melee skills I couldn't use. When I switch ARM's I'd like my action bars to change to their last setup with that ARM and an option to quick gear change in case I need to do so while on the move and it needs to be done in a hurry.

The armor damage/body damage feature is a new one for the MMO world's and I am ALL for it. It adds new graphic, real time damage for us to cheer on. When we lop off a wyrm's arm, oh man the fanfare will be insane lol. Real time damage on the armor, cracking and breaking off. Oh the blood and violence that will ensue. Lol.

Hiromichi Tanaka answered some questions for Nowgamer, here's the link with a translation and all provided by FFXIV Core - Interview post The most notable of questions in my opinion were

What is the idea behind Final Fantasy XIV? What are you looking to achieve and what will the player experience be like?

There are two unique points to Final Fantasy XIV. The first is ‘guildleve’, a system that allows people to get rewards or learn certain skills in a short time, like 30 minutes. So even if you are a solid player or part of a smaller group you can still manage your time very efficiently and level up your character any way you like. We also have the armoury system, which allows players to change class by holding different equipment, so this allows more flexibility to players. They can learn abilities during this process and by combining different abilities you can customise and create your character. Also, because it’s Final Fantasy, you can expect a huge storyline.

I do like these features in FFXIV, the guildleve system and the armoury system, really I do. My problem is that, yes we have the guildleves, but what if the players take it and force it into a way to solo constantly and never party? Towards the end of Alpha version they implemented a feature that restricts the amount of guildleves you can take out at any one point. 3 leves for every 2 hours, obtaining the last leve will start the clock and you can't do anymore until that is up. You have no indicator of when that time is up either. I hope they put this in the final retail version as it would keep the game friendly for those that don't have much time to play, but push the party aspect which is why MMO's exist in the first place.

You mentioned before an epic storyline running throughout the entire game. That’s quite difficult to do in an MMO because you’re either going on a secondary mission or, - the way Warcraft does it – is to have the story going on around the player, rather than through the player. I wanted to see how you’ve made the player feel very much a part of that storyline and to still give them a sense of freedom?

The main idea is the same as the package titles of the Final Fantasy series. NPCs will be the key trigger of the game, so by talking to NPCs they will give you the storyline and you will experience it in this way. The key points of the Final Fantasy XIV storyline are that you will be experiencing what happened in the past. By doing that you will discover the secrets of the world. If it’s a package title, sometimes by following the story you can’t do anything else, you just have to keep following the story. But because it’s an MMO, you can stop the story at certain points when you like and try out a different quest. So you have much more freedom and also by trying the quests that might help you experience the storyline, the character will feel a part of the main story. We managed to do that as we have a lot of experience from Final Fantasy XI so we have the know-how to do that.

I'm glad my character is a part of the main story, it brings more reality to the game, the immertion that the developers and fans of Final Fantasy crave. In FFXI, we were part of the story, but this time around I expect much much more. I expect every aspect of my character to change the would be story to become more about me and my part in the story. Kind of like the old Choose your own adventure Dungeons & Dragons Books. I miss those books!

In terms of where the MMO space can go. Do you feel we could ever see a Final Fantasy MMO on handhelds? Could that work?
Yes I believe so. It’s definitely possible. Both DS and PSP both have networks so it’s definitely possible, but The CPU of these mobile consoles are much lower spec when compared to home consoles or PC so that could be the aspect that causes difficulty when you want to transfer a console MMO to handheld. If you want to make one custom built for the technology, this is more possible.

I want an MMO for both the DS and the PSP! Mobile MMOing with a headset and all! Who would deny that! Jesus. Even if they are little Ragnarok Online type spirtes. Jack up that CPU, GPU and cram it into those little mobile devices. We want mobile MMOing!

Phew! That wall of words was definitely a mouthful. -dies- Enjoy everyone! As we wait together in angst for the release of Final Fantasy XIV BETA! This is Wicked, signing off!
